Bruiser's Story

Bruiser - Rescue dog
In car

Bruiser is a sweet, gentle rescue dog from Mississippi... He was a "practice dog" that was sent from a shelter to the veterinary school at Mississippi State University for hip surgery. He was 5 months old at the time and didn't have a long life ahead of him. Usually, veterinary schools perform the treatment and send the animals back to the shelter where they have a 10 day life span if they are not adopted.

He was saved by a wonderful veterinary student from New Hampshire, Krista Gazzola, who with others started a rescue program at the school, Homeward Bound. Go to website

The program now places a large number of dogs each month in happy homes. We happened to see a short segment on Krista on a New Hampshire TV station.

He is fully recovered (good surgeon!), 65 pounds of fun, and turned out to be quite handsome with beautiful fur. Bruiser is the easiest dog ever. He comes when called and you don't even know he's around - he's very quiet. And he still has that smile and energy! I hope you’ll have a chance to meet him.

He and I both wish that everyone would have the pleasure of saving your new best friend.

The first photos of Bruiser that we saw... were not encouraging. He was small, had uneven fur and features, and frankly, looked completely goofy. But he had an infectious smile and energy about him. He was going to be a project. We picked him up in New Hampshire at Krista’s mother’s farm. He was 7 months old at the time, recovering from hip surgery, walking on three legs and had a host of problems - giardia, manage and a yeast infection, to name a few. He was very thin and had lost a lot of fur.

Success! Message received.
